mega malls

The biggest shopping mall in the world is not in the United States, but in China (People's Republic of) - the South China Mall in Dongguan at 660 000 square metres (even though there are still lots of empty shops). Two other malls under construction in China may be even bigger.

This will be surpassed by the Mall of Arabia in Dubai at 1 million square metres when completed.

The West Edmonton Mall in Alberta, Canada at 350 000 square metres, the largest in North America, is only the fourth biggest in the world.

Thankfully, we don't have such large monstrosities in Australia. The largest mall in Australia is located in Melbourne called Knox City at 142 244 square metres.

Mega malls are too crowded. The only advantage of shopping in one place is to maximise the probability of purchasing the one item at a reasonable price. At the mall near my work (which when I first moved to Canberra many years ago, was dubbed 'the largest shopping centre in the Southern Hemisphere') I've wasted a lot of time going from shop to shop trying to find something as simple as a memory card for my digital camera. None of the shops stocked it. I can see the mall from the office window and it is ghastly.

Back to work today, ho hum.
