300th anniversary of the Treaty of Union

Today marked the 300th anniversary of the Treaty of Union which merged the Kingdoms of England and Scotland into the Kingdom of Great Britain. Wales had already been incorporated into England in 1284 following conquest by King Edward I. The union with Ireland and eventual division was more complicated.

This facsimile of the Exemplification of the Treaty of Union, 1707, can be seen in the Scottish Parliament Visitor Centre. It was reproduced for the exhibition from the original held in the National Archives of Scotland

Would Scotland be different today without the union? Would Scots be speaking Gaelic instead of English?

Not much happened today. Work was busy. Emily and I have been watching episodes of Heroes.
