deconstructing fast food

The Guardian wrote about Erik Trinidad's blog Fancy Fast Food in which he deconstructs fast food into gourmet creations.

Even a McDonald's Big Mac can be made to resemble food
First deconstruct the Big mac into its parts: (sing along now) two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions, and a sesame seed bun… plus the french fries, ice, and Coca-Cola. Dice the cheese, cube the middle and bottom buns, and extract the sesame seeds from the top bun. Take the french fries and some pieces of bun and purée them in a food processor with water (melted ice), then top it off with the diced cheese. Rinse the onions and lettuce in a colander and garnish it with “croutons” made from cubed bun pieces. Slice the beef patties, and then garnished it with sesame seeds and top it off with slices of pickles. Serve on a white rounded square plate with a dollop of Thousand Island dressing (the special sauce); serve the Coca-Cola in a wine glass.

Looks can be deceiving. It wouldn't taste any better.

Ew!

Beijing Wide Open

The Beijing Olympics begin in exactly one year's time. There is already a lot of media and other interest groups in Beijing.

Surely there would be far too many to try and censor. Even so, it takes a brave or foolish person to try and take on the might of the powerful regime.

Still, the blog by Lhadon Tethong, president of Students for a Free Tibet, makes for interesting reading, which is the point of it. It's called Beijing Wide Open.

Who is Lhadon?

lhadon.jpgA Tibetan woman born and raised in Canada, Lhadon Tethong has traveled the world, working to build a powerful youth movement for Tibetan independence. She has spoken to countless groups about the situation in Tibet, most notably to a crowd of 66,000 at the 1998 Tibetan Freedom Concert in Washington, D.C. She first became involved with Students for a Free Tibet (SFT) in 1996, when she founded a chapter at University of King’s College in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Since then, Lhadon has been a leading force in many strategic campaigns, including the unprecedented victory against China’s World Bank project in 2000.

Lhadon is a frequent spokesperson for the Tibetan independence movement, and serves as co-chair of the Olympics Campaign Working Group of the International Tibet Support Network. She has worked for SFT since March 1999 and currently serves as the Executive Director of Students for a Free Tibet International.

Students for a Free Tibet works in solidarity with the Tibetan people in their struggle for freedom and independence. SFT is a chapter-based network of young people and activists around the world. Through education, grassroots organizing, and non-violent direct action, SFT campaigns for Tibetans’ fundamental right to political freedom. SFT’s role is to empower and train youth as leaders in the worldwide movement for social justice.

William Kamkwamba's blog

William Kamkwamba built a windmill using whatever material he could find, in order generate electricity.

He has a wonderful blog about his experiences.

Me_with_the_book_that_changed_my_li My name is William Kamkwamba. I am 19 years old. I live in Mastala Village in the area of T/A Wimbe in the Kasungu district of Malawi, about 2 1/2 hours north of Lilongwe, Malawi's capital city. Over the next few weeks, I will try to communicate the journey I have taken over the last several years.

One note: My native language is Chichewa, the indigenous language of Malawi. The country's official language is English, and my English comprehension is good. I can speak pretty well, too, and write, but I'm a bit out of practice, so a friend of mine is helping with the writing and editing of this blog.

At home I live with my family, parents Agnes and Trywell Kamkwamba and four of my six sisters. I'm second among the seven children: my older sister is married and has two children and lives away from our home. My next younger sister is away part of the year at school.

You can read the rest of his blog here. From being discovered through his invention, William now has access to computers and the internet. Knowledge is truly amazing and it is great how William is learning all the time and applying his knowledge.

other blogs

Taxi (cab) drivers must have lots of interesting tales to tell.

So a blog from a taxi driver would be good reading.

Adrian Neylan who drives a taxi in Sydney writes a good blog called CABLOG.

Interesting reading.
